To all our potential and returning cruise line guests, Alaska Nature Tours is preparing to safely operate our Alaska Nature & Wildlife Expedition, Bear & Eagle Quest, and Rainforest Hike for the 2024 Alaska Cruise Season. The top priority for the travel industry – including cruise lines, travel agents, ports, destinations, suppliers – continues to be the health and safety of passengers, crew, and the communities you visit.
Participating Cruise Lines include Princess Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line from Skagway and American Cruise Lines, Seabourn Odyssey, Holland America Lines, and Lindblad in the Haines, Alaska Port.
The following excursions are offered on several cruise lines in Skagway and Haines, Alaska. Excursions may be booked online with the cruise line shore excursion links. PRINCESS PORT EXCURSIONS
Alaska Nature & Wildlife Expedition
The journey begins with a scenic cruise aboard a high-speed ferry along North America’s longest and deepest fjord to Haines. Upon arrival in Haines, join personable naturalists on a tour through the enchanting Chilkoot River Valley. Nestled between rugged glaciers and snowcapped mountain, this fertile valley is the centuries-old fishing grounds of the Tlingit people and home to generations of brown bears, bald eagles, mountain goat, marine mammals, numerous birds, and spawning salmon.
Bear & Eagle Quest (Aug. and Sept.)
Experience a quintessential Alaska adventure as you search for brown bears and eagles foraging along a scenic river during an outing in Haines. This tour is only offered during the peak of the salmon spawning in August and September. Use powerful spotting scopes (photos can be taken through the scopes), as guides search for and identify mountain goats in alpine meadows, bears along the river, seals, bald eagles, shore birds and waterfowl that live along the Chilkoot watershed.
CARNIVAL SHORE EXCURSIONS
Alaska Nature & Wildlife Expedition
Revive your sense of wonder on this comprehensive bus and walking exploration of the area known for its wildlife and scenic beauty. Cruise approximately 45 minutes down the glacial fjord between Skagway and Haines on a ferry, enjoying a narration and close-to-the-water views of scenic waterfalls and marine wildlife. This unique tour explores six spectacular wildlife habitats including ocean, estuary, river, lake, muskeg, and rain forest. Perfect for the inquisitive traveler and your best opportunity to photograph bald eagles in the wild.
Evening Wildlife Expedition (Aug. and Sept.)
Naturalists take you to the sheltered valley of the Chilkoot River, which was for thousands of years, an ancestral fishing site for the Tlingit people and for brown bears. As the pink salmon run begins, bear families descend on the river, leaving the forest to forage along the grassy banks. From the safety of the tour bus, powerful spotting scopes help provide close-range sightings of the bears and eagles along the estuary, river, and lake.
DISNEY PORT ADVENTURES
Alaska Nature & Wildlife Expedition (SW 38)
Travel to a secluded area with multiple habitats where you’ll explore the wilderness with a naturalist guide. On this adventure you will have a great opportunity to photograph the stunning scenery and wildlife in their natural habitat. Stop by a fish weir, used to count, measure and weigh salmon during the spawning season. Enjoy a leisurely pace where enough time is taken for exploration, photography, observation of animal behavior and lots of questions. Enjoy a refreshing nature walk beneath the canopy of trees in the temperate rainforest that leads to you to an ancient muskeg.
Bear & Eagle Quest (SW 44)
Hold onto to your camera as you ride through the Chilkoot Valley on the lookout for bears, bald eagles and other wildlife. Arrive in Haines and travel by expedition bus to the sheltered river valley, for centuries the favorite fishing site for the Tlingit People and also for brown bears. As you enter the watershed, be on the lookout for brown bear descending on the river, leaving the cover of the forest to fish along the grassy banks. From the protection of your bus, witness the food chain in action as salmon provide food for bears, eagles, and birds.

From Skagway, venture to Haines, Alaska on a scenic, 40-minute ferry ride. Arrive at the cruise ship dock in Haines, AK, meet your guides, and board the bus to enjoy wildlife viewing where naturalist show you the habitats in which they live. This is a great opportunity to photograph bald eagles in the wild while searching for brown bears, and other wildlife. The duration of this excursion is 6.25 hours round-trip from Skagway. **Includes a meal, round-trip ferry, Skagway meet & greet, state park fee, sales tax, and a short town tour.
